What Is a Mother-Son Door, and When Does the Narrow Leaf Earn Its Place?
A mother-son door is a two-leaf door in which one leaf is the main door and the second is narrower. You use the main leaf every day, as you would a single door, and open the narrow leaf as well on the days you need the full width, such as when furniture is moved in. We make three mother-son models: Vasudha VS01, Kutumb KM3003 and Ananda MS01.
What is a mother-son door?
The name describes the two leaves: a large "mother" leaf and a smaller "son" leaf beside it, hung in one frame. Our Kutumb KM3003 page describes it as a primary panel paired with a narrower secondary one, for openings where extra width is needed only now and then. A double door has two leaves of the same width.
On all three of our models the door is supplied with its frame, the frame is 100 mm thick and the locking is a Single Multi Lock.
Which mother-son door models do we make?
| Model | Sizes listed (mm) | Material and face | Frame | Lock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vasudha VS01 | 2100 x 1200 x 100, 2400 x 1200 x 100 | Galvanised steel with a wood texture | 100 mm | Single Multi Lock |
| Kutumb KM3003 | Not printed yet, ask us | Galvanised steel with a metallic finish | 100 mm | Single Multi Lock |
| Ananda MS01 | Ask us to confirm | Mild steel with a rust-proof, termite-resistant coating | 100 mm | Single Multi Lock |
Sizes are written height x width x depth, so 2100 x 1200 x 100 is 2100 mm high and 1200 mm wide. The VS01 page describes the door as rust-free, termite-proof, fire resistant and soundproof.
When does the narrow leaf earn its place?
Most days it stays shut and the door behaves like a single door. It earns its place on the days a single leaf is too narrow:
- Moving in, when sofas, beds, wardrobes and large appliances have to come through.
- Renovation work, when material and tools go in and out.
- Family occasions, when many guests arrive at once.
Where does a mother-son door sit between a single and a double door?
The Vasudha VS01 is made in all three forms, so its sizes show the steps clearly.
| Vasudha VS01 type | Widths listed (mm) | Heights listed (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Single door | 960, 1050 | 2100 (the 1050 width also 2400) |
| Mother-son door | 1200 | 2100, 2400 |
| Double door | 1500 | 2100, 2400 |
So the mother-son door fills the gap between a standard single opening and a full double opening. If your opening is about 1500 mm or wider, read our guide to double door designs for a main entrance.
Mother-son, wide single or double door for a 1200 mm opening?
At 1200 mm wide you have three ways to fill the opening, all listed at 2100 and 2400 mm high.
| Option | How it opens | Our models at 1200 mm |
|---|---|---|
| Wide single door | One leaf takes the whole width | Kutumb KM5005, Kutumb KM8008 |
| Mother-son door | Main leaf for daily use, narrow leaf when needed | Vasudha VS01 |
| Double door | Two leaves of equal width | Kutumb KM4004 |
A wide single leaf is one large leaf to swing every time. A double door splits the opening into two narrow halves. A mother son door design keeps a full-size main leaf for daily use and holds the extra width in reserve. Our pages do not print the width of each leaf, so ask us for the split before you plan furniture or a ramp. For narrower openings, see our single door designs by width.
What should you send us for a quote?
- The width and height of the opening, in millimetres.
- The wall thickness at the frame.
- The face you prefer: wood texture, metallic or plain mild steel.
- The largest item that will need to pass through, if you know it.
Send these from the Vasudha VS01, Kutumb KM3003 or Ananda MS01 page and we will confirm the size that fits.
